Why the 4-day work week...

TL;DR: It gives us the freedom to not only work in the business but also on the business. This means we can take a day to explore new ideas, experiment with software, or even take a well-deserved break.

What Does the 4-Day Workweek Mean to Us?

There’s some debate about where the concept of the workweek originated. Over the years, various U.S. leaders have proposed changes to work hours during both difficult and prosperous economic times. The 5-day workweek, as we know it today, is often attributed to Henry Ford, who implemented it at the Ford Motor Company while producing the Model T in the early 1900s. Although there were earlier attempts to standardize work hours, Ford was a key figure in shaping the modern workweek.

In 1933, the U.S. Senate passed a law establishing a 30-hour workweek, but it was later revoked due to pressure from labor unions and other stakeholders.

During the Nixon administration, there was another push to reduce the workweek, but like in the 1930s, this initiative was ultimately abandoned. This back-and-forth has persisted for decades. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic, momentum for a 4-day workweek grew, with many organizations advocating for it. The largest study on this topic, led by Josh Bersin, concluded that the 4-day workweek not only makes financial sense but also gives employees the flexibility they need to live more balanced lives. This results in less burnout and lower turnover rates.

What It Means for Us at Height Advantages

While we don’t have employees—only contractors—we believe in the same principles. Though we sometimes work on Fridays or weekends, we actively try to avoid it. On average, this only happens a few weeks out of the year. So, you might be wondering: what do we do with the extra time on these free Fridays?

How We Use the Extra Day

The short answer? Anything and everything! As the owner, I don’t mind if someone spends their day watching a season of The Office or running errands. Personally, I use this time for self-development and learning new skills that can benefit the business.

I often work in a “light” capacity—responding to emails or taking quick calls—but nothing too demanding. In the past, I’ve used this time to brush up on algebra, learn about new economic principles, and acquire business skills like negotiation and AI technology.

This extra time is our “secret sauce,” and it perfectly embodies our slogan: Height Advantages: Advantages at All Heights.
